🏉 PARENT PLAYBOOK: SMOOTHIES THAT SLAM! 💚🥤
When your kid’s fighting cancer, nutrition becomes a battlefield—and this one’s winnable. Enter… THE SMOOTHIE.

🍹 Why Smoothies?
Because let’s be honest—getting a kid with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) to eat a full meal isn’t always possible. They’re tired, nauseous, or just plain fed up. But a smoothie? It’s cold, fast, tasty (mostly), and loaded with goodness.
For us, it’s not just food. It’s a ritual, part of building new behaviours as a family. Music on. Fruit chopped. Blender roaring. A mini event before the daily madness begins.
“When the world gives you melons… you ask, where the f*** are my lemons? And when you get them… you squeeze them in your eyes!”
- Slammin Sam B & Me, aka Dad
That’s our LFG Mantra. 😎
Oh—and we make it a drinking competition. Hurricane Harry (Sammy’s brother) always wins. The kid’s already set for being a prop and the boat race!
🥦💣 THE GREENIE MEANIE! 💥💚
Here’s one of our go-to smoothies packed with all the good stuff:
- 🥬 A handful of kale
- 🥬 A handful of spinach
- 🍌 1 banana
- 🍐 1 pear
- 🍋 Juice of 1 lime
- 🍏 1 apple
- 🥝 1 kiwi
- 🍊 1 tangerine
- 🥄 1 tbsp flax seeds
- 🥄 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
- 🥄 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 🌰 6 brazil nuts
- 🍓 6 frozen strawberries
- 🍯 1 tbsp honey
- 🍍 Half a pineapple
- 🥛 Fill the gaps with oat milk

🧬 Nutritional Breakdown & Why It’s Good for ALL Kids:
Kale & Spinach – Rich in iron, folate, vitamin K, and antioxidants to support blood cell production and fight fatigue.
Banana – Great for potassium and energy (and makes it smoother).
Pear & Apple – Fibre + hydration = smoother digestion.
Lime – Vitamin C bomb to help the immune system and taste buds.
Kiwi & Tangerine – More vitamin C, potassium and enzymes to ease inflammation.
Chia, Flax, Pumpkin Seeds – Omega-3s, fibre and zinc: immune system boosters and great for gut health.
Brazil Nuts – Selenium-rich and great for cell repair.
Frozen Strawberries – Vitamin C, folate, and a taste kids will actually like.
Honey – Antibacterial and soothing for sore mouths.
Oat Milk – Gentle on the tummy, dairy-free, and full of B-vitamins.
🧠 But Isn’t It Full of Sugar?
Maybe… but I’d argue it’s better than processed crap and fizzy drinks. Everything in moderation. This smoothie isn’t about calories—it’s about nourishment. Hydration. Energy. Rebuilding. So yeah… we’re sticking with it.
💬 “I’m not a doctor, nutritionist or smoothie guru—just a dad trying to keep his son hydrated, fed, and strong enough to take on chemo.”
🛠️ Tips:
- 💥 Invest in a decent 1.5-litre smoothie maker.
- 🧊 Freeze leftovers for a quick fix on busy days.
- 📋 Turn smoothie time into a routine.
- 🤢 Don’t panic if they throw it up—it’s still worth trying.
- 🎵 Add music and fun—it’s about more than nutrition; it’s connection.
